Carved from the Heart: A Portrait of Grief, Healing, and Community

Publisher:

New Day Films

Year:

1997

Abstract:

Candidly addressing the issues of substance abuse, domestic violence, and the emotional devastation of war, this film documents a community's role in healing a father's grief. The totem pole, a powerful symbol of Tshimshian culture, is carved and lifted by the community to memorialize a young man who died of a drug overdose. Interviews with family members and friends underscore the senselessness of the young man's death yet celebrate the healing and hope that follow. Includes discussion & study guide. VHS format. 30 and 15 minutes.
